you can do what Joe said above if you have this option from your email provider.
If you use an email client (such as Outlook or any other) you can try the following software for free from Mailinfo
http://www.mailinfo.com/web/
If you don't have a POP3/SMTP account you can get one for free from

Dennis, to my knowlege, there's currently NO email program that will tell you if someone's OPENED your sent e-letter; such a program would be a spammer czar's wet dream.

There ARE some "reciept" programs that confirm the e-letter was sent to them, though.

Bout the best way to know if someone opened your mail is to await their response back.

You can send your email requesting a return receipt. Otherwise you can't know if they saw it, unless you are on an internal email system at a job which allows you to see when someone opens and reads your email. Some email providers allow you to 'unsend' an email but I don't think you can see if someone opens it.

If you are using Outlook:

Click on tools, options, preferences, email options, tracking options and select Read Receipt. This is for all emails you send.

If you only one to do select emails:
start the email and click options, and Request Read Receipt

Not sure about other email applications though, sorry.
