A good actor will make a performance seem, perfectly natural. The objective of any actor, is to take their lines and what they know of their character and make it their own. Character actors, are very good at playing different kinds of personalities; they are able to portray a specific personality type, in a naturalistic manner. Method actors, immerse them selves in their material. They will live their character and their character's life. By doing this, they are able to "feel" their character and essentially, become that character.
However an actor chooses to prepare, a good actor, if he has done his job well, will make his performance seemless and uncontrived. The goal is to not make people think you are acting (even though, they know you are) but to make them believe, you have convictions for every thing that you say and do.
When an audience sees an actor's performance, the first thing that will tip them off, as to a bad performance is, the actor's inability to believe in what he's saying or doing. A bad actor will not feel the way the character feels and when that occurs, the realism will not be there. That's why actor's are always talking about "motivations". Motivation is what makes some one do and say things. You must first understand a character's motivations, before you can understand the character.
Here are some actors that do their job well: Gary Oldman, Joaquin Phoenix, Russell Crowe, Daniel Day Lewis.

A good actor makes their audience forget they are holding a program or bag of popcorn. A good actor lives in their role, they listen and persue objectives and use their body to create different people. They have a specific history and specific relationships with each of the different characters. Their fellow actors trust them as artists and enjoy working with them.
A bad actor doesn't listen to their partners, they care more about making a good impression than telling the story. They try hard to make the audience laugh, they try hard to make the audience cry. They don't have the talent to live in the character. A bad actor is someone other actors don't trust.

I think as a general rule of thumb "good" and "bad" acting is in the eye of the beholder. For me a bad actress would be Paris Hilton. There is absolutely nothing that I find attractive or compelling about her! Whether she has an IQ of 6969 or not - to me she is an air head, with incorrect cotton wool views on life and is a pampered little spoiled brat who only gets to where she is because of mummy and daddy. Britney Spears and Lady Gaga are also terrible advocates for young women. Though that's a horse of a different color. I love Johnny Deep, Robin Williams, Alan Rickman, Kenneth Branagh, Antonio Banderas, Salma Heyak, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett, Liv Tyler, Idina Menzel, Rachel Beck, Michael Cormick, Ian Macallen, Hugh Jackman and was very impressed by the late Elvis Presley and Heath Ledger. To me a stand out actor is someone who takes me away from where I am at, provides me with a story/insight on what is going on in somebody else's life and I enjoy/am compelled to see how it ends. All the actors listed above have done that for me, I've laughed, I've cried, I've thought, I've loved, I've loved to hate and I've had a great time. To me that's what good acting is. As well as this, they all present themselves as decent and respectful people of society - they are the true class acts. Great question, all the best :)

A good actor has the ability to utilize everything they leaned at acting school, yet behave on stage (or on screen) like they are just reacting to a situation like anyone else would. A good actor can immerse their personality into the character they are portraying, causing the audience to relate to them, hate them, love them, feel empathy/ sympathy for them, or even convince people that they are a superhero.
A bad actor always has the appearence of a really talented kid in high school play. For example: Lorenzo Lamas or Frank Stallone.

A good actor can play many different personlites very well. If you see the same actor playing the same personalites overa and over again, you can't really call them gifted.

Interesting, so the height and look are not what convinces us if an actor is great, it,s their ability to pull us into who they are portraying and be empathetic toward their choices in gesture voice tone things of this nature.....your good looks won,t do it, it,s way way passed that......not that many greats....
