I was told that Americans living in border towns will be able to have some kind of pass and not require a passport. Anyone have information?

It seems now that it will be all worked out for US/Canada passport free travel to continue. In any case Canada and the border states are lobbying hard for ID cards rather than passports.

Yes that is true, they extended the deadline to 1-1-07 because thay were flooded with applications for passports. you will not be able to travel anywhere outside of the US without it. If you are going to get one be prepared to shell out somewhere between $150.00 to $200.00 per passport. I live about 15 minutes from the canadian border and I'm going to miss going over there.

I know that passports will be required in the future, didn't know the date though....but I'm fairly sure they won't be required for ALL of Mexico. (Parts of Sonora and Baja are 'free zones'...you don't even need a tourist permit to visit those places.) Someobody got the cost wrong though. Last time I checked, the fee for a passport was $35...mind you, that was a few years ago.

As it stands now, all Americans will need to have passports to enter canada or mexico at the first of the year. Unless you wade the river like the illegals do.

I haven't heard that, but contrary to what Tygon said, you do not have to use a passport to get into Canada if you're just visiting for a short period of time. I was just there in '04 and only had to have my driver's license and birth certificate. There are two other forms of ID you can carry to accompany your driver's license. Spend some time googling and you'll see the exact requirements.

In my opinion - everyone should have a Passport - why are people making such a big deal about carrying a Passport?
