I don't get it. These discussions about the illegals pretty much go round and round--just like discussions about God. So why spend all your time on it? Is it really fun, arguing n a particularly self-righteous way with complete strangers you'll never convert to your own beliefs i?

I don't consider it arguing. I consider it learning both sides of the issue as well as you can before you get to vote on it. It is a heated debate now in the USA as there are many different opions. It important we talk about this since so many lifes and ways of life hang in the balance. Eventually a fair and balanced solution will be reached (some will be mad but the majority of the people will be happy). This is what makes the USA such a great place.... we can discuss or argue about these things without fear of being killed or put in jail. We want to preserve this freedom that we have. We would like the whole world to experience this too, but we want you to do it in your own countries since we can't support everyone here.

Are you talking about "illegal aliens"? Any discussion that goes round and round--you know the arguments are not based on logic or facts, just "feelings," no matter what "facts" are trotted out. It is the nature of people to distrust any group identified as the "other". It is part of our genetic heritage and our ancient way of life. Remember pep rallies in high school? Another manifestation of the same sort of thing: we belong, they don't. Why people get off on feeling like this is a mystery to me. I'm one of those perpetual outsiders, a dweeb/geek/nerd.
If our society really wanted to fix this problem, not just enjoy the waving of fists, it would crack down harder on the reason the "illegals" are coming here: Americans are giving them jobs! Do not employ people whose legality you question. Police should do "raids" on these employers. Print their names in the paper just like they print the names of prostitutes' customers. '
No jobs, no illegals.

Most people talking about political issues just come here to express their opinions, not to ask meaningful, critical questions. Then they select the "best answer" by picking whoever supports their initial statement. So, to answer your question, no, there's not a good reason to come an discuss political issues in this type of "ask" forum.

"Issues" like immigration and religion are really controversial. No one can really have a wrong answer because there's always someone to back him or her up on whatever view he or she has. It makes us feel smart and informed to talk about these things that probably won't ever get solved and pretend like we have a solution.
