Beta is the second Greek letter. When used with software or internet sites, it indicates a version that is still in development, but is able to basically be used by the public.

Garbanzo couldn't be more wrong. Beta versions are often released much earlier than their finished version, and sometimes not to the public. Releasing early versions so that developers can test your software is a crucial step needed for top-of-the-line programs. This is a common practice that many top companies follow. The buggiest of the bunch are the ones who don't. It has nothing to do with programming "skill". There are just too many different environments out there, that it's impossible to test for and prevent ALL incompatibilities (against hardware drivers, other programs, etc).

Even the greatest authors in the world have their work proofread before publishing.

I am sick of betas! it's like the software developers don't know how to make a finished product so they just throw out the unfinished version to "test" and get "feedback." If they were really good programmers they should be able to work out the major bugs before releasing it. But by labeling it beta, they can call the complaints they receive "feedback." At least it's free.

Beta is where they test something out for glitches and bugs. Then when they're done, they take it out of Beta.

Beta is a trial testing period for things.
