Simple answer.

Unix - Designed by programmers for programmers

Linux - Designed by hackers for hackers

Unless you are an expert user, stick with windows.

(Before you beat me up, this is only MY opinion based on many years of experience with computers)

Linux is based off of Unix. Try Solaris (Unix) versus Suse (Linux). Try the command line interface of course. Ignore the GUI stuff.
Try a program that is designed for Unix (Solaris), and then try to use it on Linux (Suse). While your at it, try BSD, another spinoff of Unix. A good BSD OS to try would be the Mac.

Linux is a Graphical User Interface and Unix is a Character User Interface. i.e., UNIX is similar to DOS, and Linux similar to Windows.
