Your resume should show your work history and some major accomplishments at each job or your academic history and anything relevant to the position you are applying for. Show any certs that you have earned.
Use a cover letter to translate your knowledge, skills, and experience into something that you can do for THEM. Your cover letter should be kept to only one page and brief.
Be confident and again show them what you can do for THEM.

Caring, responsible, personable,
Strong communication skills, patience,....
working with elderly people or disabled people is so rewarding for me because _______(I can learn about them and I respect them)....
Explain all the previous experience in detail--like your volunteer work in the community and churches or other types such as caring for family or friends. List all things about people who you have helped --not just the disabled. Like if you are in organizations or other volunteer programs or tutor someone or work at a church (like Sunday school or whatever), delivering meals... things like this in your interest category or experience one will highlight your talent and desire for working and caring for others. Plus stating that you have experience if you do about knowing their hardships b/c your family member is disabled. I don't know for sure about that one.
I hope this helps. :) Good luck.

Regardless of which powerful and positive words you use remember to reread and check spelling, use a dictionary and do not rely on "spell-check" alone.
