Assertive means to defend or maintain your rights. If you are asking because of the term assertive discipline, it was introduced by Lee Cantor in the U.S and it means to establish and maintain a system of rules and the consequences of breaking them and to let it work without aggression. In a system where assertive discipline works well, teachers will not need to shout at pupils and get frustrated, instead they will just calmly apply the the consequence of breaking that particular rule. It needs consistency and a whole school approach to work but when it works its marvellous.joy!

Being assertive means that you deal with your problems and issues in a constructive way. You deal with others in a respectful manner and you expect respect in return. This is compared to passive people who let others take advantage of them and aggressive people who do what they want and don't really care how they get it. Another angle of assertive is to be motivated and use initiative, drive to get things going in your life.
