Your question is not very specific ; but in a nutshell the heart functions to circulate the blood. Why ? The blood carries oxygen to be distributed to all your extremities and vital organs. When you breathe in through your lungs you oxygenate your blood, it cannot sit still there with the oxygen it needs to circulate to nourish the whole body. At the last step of this never ending cycle the blood is returned to the lungs to pick up more oxygen and the pumping continues.
