I believe each, still uses your own individual user name for each site

Now that Yahoo and Microsoft have "joined forces", it's likely a new beta Yahoo Messenger and/or MSN Messenger will be rolling out soon that will allow you to do the vice versa friend transfer between chat programs.

Add Windows Live friends to your contact list by clicking the “Add Contact” button – the same way you’ve always added friends to your contact list. To start IMing, your Windows Live friend must accept your invitation. Also, they must be using the latest beta version of Windows Live™ Messenger. If your IM detects a need for them to upgrade, your invitation will automatically include a link for them to download the Windows Live™ Messenger Beta.

Windows Live friends will add you to their contact list the same way they would add any contact. But there is one catch: you both need to be running your Messenger’s latest version.

This requires users of either application to both download and register their Messenger – Yahoo! Messenger with Voice for Yahoo! users, Windows Live™ Messenger Beta for Windows Live users.

Click here to get your Yahoo! Messenger with Voice and register by clicking “New! IM Windows Live™ (MSN) Messenger friends” at the top of your new Messenger window. On the page that opens, click “Join the Beta” to register, and off you go!

To make it easy, if one of you is running your brand-new version and invites the other, who isn’t, the one who isn’t will be offered a link to download their Beta right in the invitation. Nice!
