i want to just go relic/treasure hunting

Here's the correct answer. The 3 top brands are White's, Garrett, and Fisher. Most serious treasure hunters use one of these. You can go online and check out their respective websites to find the location of a dealer near you. They have models in most price ranges.

Some advice...just like anything else, you get what you pay for. You don't necessarily have to buy the most expensive model, but I can tell you from experience, you don't want to buy a really cheap "toy" one either...otherwise you won't find anything other than bottle caps and beer can pull tabs. You'll get frustrated, quit, and then it will just be a pricey dustcatcher sitting in the closet.
