I live in Southern California as well.

The people saying that water is a good thing are right. Good advice. Another thing that people might not see right away is the fact that Southern California is notorious for poor clay soil. Alkaline clay soil.

One of the best tings I can tell you:
In those places where you either expect performance, or are having trouble; you must make sure that your roots are growing deep enough into the soil. It adds resistance to heat for the plant. If your soil gets really bad less than 9 inches deep, it's time to add organic matter to the soil and mix it in at least 9 inches deep for good drainage and good roots.

Some organic soil conditioners contain saponin. Armstrong Garden Centers carry several brands of soil conditioners with saponin in them. Saponin is derived from the yucca plant and allows roots to grow deeper into the soil without rotting. It must be reapplied according to the label.

Make sure that the plants get plenty of water. Water your plants preferably in the morning so that the plants have energy to withstand the heat and also for the leaves to dry off to avoid disease.

Lots of water. Early morning or late eveving or both. Have you planted sun-loving plants? Plants like begonias, pansies, lobelia,
and fuschias don't like hot direct sun and no amount of watering will help them if they are in direct sun. Before planting anything else get the advice of your local nursery regarding types of plants that thrive in environment of your yard.

I would say water plants at night. Do not water during daytime.

Make sure they have water on them. SO they can't dry up and burn.
