Is cooling related to wether you are operating on batteries or DC power?

Yes, there was a day not long ago where laptops, and PCs for that matter, were virtually silent. We all wanted faster chips and with speed comes heat, and with heat comes loud cooling fans.

Laptops suck in the air from the bottom, so if you put it on carpet it will start to overheat and the fan speed will increase in response. If you put it on your lap, look where the vent is on the bottom and position the laptop so the vent is unobstruted. If you are using programs that are cpu intensive, the loud fan speed is normal. If the computer is idle the fan should be quieter.

The answer would depend on what kind of sound it is making. If it is a soft hum, this is perfectly normal and is associated with the cooling fans. You probably never heard the fans with a desktop/tower PC since the unit was probably a bit further away from you. The only way to get a computer, laptop or otherwise, to be completely silent is to turn it off. It is then a doorstop. But at least it is silent. And no, cooling has nothing to do with whether or not you are using batteries. The processor is what needs to be kept cool, and the fans are doing their job trying to keep it cool. You would do yourself a big favor if you got yourself a laptop stand with built-in cooling fans. These will help pull the hot air coming from inside your laptop further away and your laptop will run cooler and therefore smoother. And even though it is labeled a "laptop", try and avoid placing it directly on your lap, or on a pillow or on your bed or sofa, anywhere where the fan vents on the bottom would be covered up.

Good luck with your new computing adventures!

You will always have some small amount of noise from cooling fans or your machine could overheat and the fan would always operate with power or battery. Cooling is the price you pay for speed. Good luck!

No it is not a problem at all. Some systems will be more silent than others but none are completely silent. Especially if you have SATA devices in your system. SATA devices such as hard drives and CD/DVD drives can be quite noisy, but this is also normal. Relax and enjoy your new system. Good luck.

I have had 3 laptops in the last ten years.I found them all to be loud.I found that running a DVD or playing a game makes the fan kick in.A cooling pad is sold to place under your laptop to keep it cool.I have also found laptops to hot to put on my lap.
