I've never been tanning, but my sister used to work at a tanning salon. Go into a few and check them out. Don't decide by price alone. You can get really hurt if the people there don't know what they are doing. Seek out their advice, ask them their opinions. According to the Department of Health, tanning bed attendants are supposed to be able to advise prospective clients on the benefits AND dangers of tanning, and are supposed to be well-learned about it. If the person is just trying to make a sale, go somewhere else. If you have fair skin, they are only going to put you in the bed for like 5 or 7 minutes, not the full 15, no matter HOW low the setting is. Ask them for a free trial to see how you respond to it if you don't want to waste the money. But definately shop around for KNOWLEDGE, not PRICE. Good luck - And Happy Tanning!!

The best advice: don't go. Get a fake tan. No real tan is "healthy", and tanning beds increase your risk of skin cancer exponentially.
If you're intent on going, start off with a very small amount of time. Don't tan more than twice a week, and use a lotion with at least a mild sunblock in it.

when u go into a tanning salon, they give u a form to fill out on ur skin type and how or if u burn and stuff. then they determine what is best for u and suggest lotions to amplify ur tanning experience...they will put u in the bed for the correct amount of time based on ur skin type and gradually move it up...and if u ever get too hot or feel like u are going to burn u can always get out early and turn the bed off urself! have fun!

Tanning beds as a general idea are bad for the skin. There is a good chance that you'll end up with dark splotches (potentially a precursor to melanoma, a type of skin cancer) on your skin. Starting off with fair skin puts you at cancer risk right away.
It's far better to be who you are - if you are a pale-skinned person then go with that-don't try to be some fake tanned LA movie star wanna-be. Trust me, you are far more sexy being yourself then you are tryng to fit some useless Hollywood stereotype.

If your skin is really fair I wouldn't go for more than 2 or 3 minutes your first few times. You can gradually increase your time as you start to see color. You can go with your top off if you want to, it helps prevent tan lines ( I don't wear anything when I go)

only go for a couple of minutes to start with & gradually add more time as you begin to tan. (start with maybe 5 mins or less & add 1 or 2 mins in every few session) you could go without your top on but have a towel handy to cover up with since the skin in that area is thin & sensitive.

tanning beds are sooo bad for you! since its summer, lay out in the sun instead and makesure you use a low spf... you'll still get tanned without risking skin cancer or looking like a rasin as you age ;)
