You can't really prevent Tsunamis, but you can limit the amount of damage they inflict by building shore walls, barriers, etc. You can also help to make people safer by putting a comprehensive system of buoys in the ocean near at risk regions that will alert the area for evacuations long before the wave hits.

If you make plate tectonics stop, you can prevent earthquakes. That would stop all tsunamis. Unfortunately, that would require removing the heat source from the earth and probably triggering the end of life on Earth as we know it!
Just ain't possible. Sorry :(

The truth is, they are a natural cause, so you can't prevent them. But- you can be prepared. Maybe if your family doesn't have one, make a disaster plan, or a disaster kit. Keep water in it, extra food, flashlights... a life boat.. batteries ... First Aid Kit.. anything that you think might help you in a emergency =]

you can't prevent them from happening... it'd be like saying how can we prevent night from happening. But we can and are developing more sophisticated monitoring systems to detect underwater seismic activity which in turn will make early warning systems work better and help people get the time they need to get to safety.
