No, it is not a deterrent to the crime. It costs taxpayers more because of the appeals process. It is not evenly distributed, what I mean by that is it is up to the D.A. to seek the death penalty and if it is an election year then the D.A.'s office seems to seek it more often. It also seems that if you have the $ in this country you can buy a great defense. Unless every criminal that faces the death penalty is given the same type of defense that the best $ can buy then I don't see how it's right. And the fact that it serves no purpose other than revenge. Their is no justice served by capital punishment. Also can we afford to make a mistake ourselves by putting to death another innocent life.

No fence sitting on my part as you can see. Life in prison WITHOUT the possibility of parole is just fine with me.

Capital punishment is only perfomed in non-civilised countries (Saudia Arabia, some African countries, China), and USA. I'm proud to live in a country that doesn't kill it's own citizens.

There are so many reasons against killing (biblical, ethical, moral, barbaric, irreversable, plus life in a cell is harsher than straight death anyway).

Crime rates are just as high in countries with the death-penalty, and that's probably the most telling statistic.

Yes! It's been proven to work very well to reduce crime in other countries. The problem we have here in the USA is that it takes so long to get to the point of actually putting the person to death. An average of 10 years or more! If capital crimes went straight to the High Court, one trial then death, other criminals would think twice about commiting crime.

If it is dealt with properly and for the right reasons, yes.

Texas has some really good capital punishment laws.

If they know they can be put to death for a crime, they tend to avoid that crime, don't you think?

No. To many innocent people are put to death as "offenders" of crimes and evidence is found later. On top of the fact, it costs as much as life in prison. Two wrongs don't make a right.

My belief is no one should be murdered in punishment. Let them rot in a jail cell, but don't kill them.

I used to be very pro capital punishment, but I'm slowly changing my mind on it.

There are levels of crime and levels of punishment. In the end, yes, I believe that, under certain circumstances, it is imperative to exercise the death penalty. Not all, and not always. Each case needs to be examined closely and indifferently.

No. It doesn't deter crime and only give a sense of vengeance to those who were affected by the tragedy
