CC (Carbon Copy) and BCC (Blind Carbon Copy):

It's a hold-over from the days of carbon copies, when sheets of carbon paper were placed between 2 or more sheets of regular paper. Whatever was written on the top sheet was also transferred in carbon onto the other pages. It was generally a dark blue-violet kind of color. You'll still find it on some very simple sales receipt books and the like.

So...a "CC" is a carbon copy...or copies of the original.

This designation is also used professionally on memoranda to show that a memo that was sent primarily to one person has also been sent to other people with a relavent interest in the information discussed.

And this is likely how it took on a life in the internet world on email...since it existed in the professional sector for memoranda, even after Xerox/copy machines became prolific.

"BCC"...which stands for "Blind Carbon Copy"...exists for the same reason but represents something slightly different.

A "Blind Carbon Copy" is one that is sent to a person on the sly. The primary people noticed on the memorandum or email are not aware that this person/s has been sent a copy of the same item.

In the professional world, one might do this if one wanted a union representative or a manager in a separate department to know about something, but it wouldn't be appropriate to officially notice them on the addressing.

CC = Carbon Copy, in other words you are sending a copy of the email to someone else, in addition to the person in the To field. The word Carbon copy is actually a term used years ago with typewriters (before there were computers). On a typewriter to make a copy of a letter, you would use a piece of carbon transfer paper in between two sheets of regular paper. When done you would have an original and a copy of the letter for files, etc. But in the age of computers, PC, laptops, etc that "old-fashioned" term stuck and is in use today with every email that is sent.

BB or BC or Bcc = Blind copy. Means you are sending a copy to another person, but no one else that you send it to can see the Bcc email address because it's hidden or blind from everyone's sight.

Good luck.

CC is "carbon copy" back in the olden days when you typed a letter or memo on typewritter you would put carbon paper between 2 or more sheets of paper & send the copies to other parties, or file. So it just means you are sending that e-mail to others besides the main recipient. I've never seen Bb. BCC means blind carbon copy. No one else knows you are sending it to someone else.

Cc means carbon copy - the email address you add in the Cc space will receive a copy of the email, and the original recipient will see that they received a copy.

Bcc means blind carbon copy - the same as above, only the original recipient will NOT see that they received a copy.

Basically it stands for Carbon Copy and Blind Carbon Copy;

Carbon Copy sends another copy letting the other people know who received it.

Blind Carbon Copy sends a copy without letting the recipients knowing who received it.
