well i have been there and done that.
the cheapest way is to go to your local Chapters there are 2 really good books there that show you how to do it your self.
there are lots of ads around the city and always a few in the paper that advertise $300.
and the last thing to mention is that if you are in a low income tax bracket, you can apply for legal aid, they wont pay for the divorce but they will do custody, and then ask the lawyer to finish the divorce it is the cheapest way by far. as the lawyer will have already done all the work.
There is so much info out there, but the main thing to avoid big legal bills is when both parties argee. All lawyers offer 30 minutes free advice, that way you can ask a few questions and also ask them what the average final cost are. Shop around not all lawyers charge the same price and the more experience they have... the better they are.

Follow the advice of the person who gave several links. You can get a cheap divorce if it's uncontested. For a contested divorce, don't go to a traditional divorce lawyer, go to a divorce lawyer who specialized in mediation. You won't screw your partner, but you'll both get a fair deal and have much less stress.

If you go to google and type in cheap divorce, you'll find many companies offering divorces for very cheap. However, you need to have minimal assistance in dividing up your assets. Be careful when pursuing this if there are children involved!

Divorce is never cheap, but to avoid some attorney costs, try to seek some government help, they proved attorneys at a minimal cost to you.

There is no such thing as a cheap divorce. I had a pro bono attorney and it still cost me about $20,000. 00 cuz he is such a deadbeat and wouldn't pay anything he was supposed to.

You can do it yourself, you just have to go to the courthouse and file the papers and have them served and if both parties agree and it's uncontested the whole thing can be done for less than $1000.00

I know cause I've done it twice.
