'Stake' ?! That the wooden shaft they used to tie the 'witches' to, before burning them for heresy - in medieval England and Europe !
Agreed that a stake will also sizzle, when set on fire - but what use [or, market !] would a stake have in today's world ?
If any company offered me a post as their marketing director, and expected me to 'sell the sizzle and the stake', I'd refuse it - because it would NOT be worth 'staking' my future on !
:-))
The saying which you quote actually goes : "you can't sell the steak without the sizzle" !

The 'steak' is the actual thing you're selling (a product or service). The 'sizzle' is the impression or excitement associated with the product; it isn't tangible or quantifiable but is important psychologically.

Example: The 'steak' might be an in ground swimming pool. The 'sizzle' - Think about all the fun you'll have with family and friends.

Often when people buy a product, especially an expensive optional purchase, what they're really buying is the 'sizzle' - what they think it will do to make them happy. That should be the focus of your sales pitch for such items. For more mundane or utilitarian items - such as, say, a garden hose - the 'steak' is the selling point; IOW focus of price, reliability, and functions.

Not to be rude, but anyone who's risen to the level of marketing director should know this.
