Originally, it meant a long, thin strip of leather. When I was young, it referred to those beach sandals now known as flip-flops. Nowadays it refers to those ultra-skimpy bathing suits (in particular, the bottom half) that only have a thin strip of material in back (sometimes referred to, rather accurately albeit somewhat crudely, as "butt-floss").
