Put the pearls against your neck. Genuine pearls will feel cold to the touch as plastic coated pearls generally feel warmer. Bite or rasp the pearl. A fake will feel smooth and slippery, while the real pearl has a grain or grit. If you are able, set fire to the pearl. The real pearl will not burn.

The best thing to do is get it tested at a jewelry store. Someone once told me that if you smash a pearl with the bottom of a glass, if it's fake, it will shatter. If not, it's real. I've never wanted to take a chance on that, though.

Rub two pearls together. They should feel grainy and not
totally smooth. Fake pearls are usually plastic beads covered with coating that is very smooth. Real pearls have texture to them.

Rub it against your teeth. The ones that feel rough are real. My father is a pearl expert for a jewelery store. TRUST me.

I know that this is going to sound weird but this is how to tell... put the pearl against your tooth and scratch it. If it feels sandy, it's real. Otherwise, its fake.
