You got me. I started watching football on television in 1966 when I was 6 and NEVER could understand what he brought to sports. You had guys like Buck Buchanan, Dick Butkus, and the like beating the crap out of anything that moved and Ol' Howie (bless his soul) waxing philosophic like Shakespeare. I love literature, and I love football, but not at the same time. Sorry that I cannot contribute a better answer. I guess it's because he impressed the right people who happen to write the checks.

He wasn't by me. Use to turn off the TV sound, tune the radio to the radio broadcast of the game, watch the TV picture and NOT listen to Howard.

He was one of those people that you loved to hate. He was very intelligent and had a huge vocabulary, so he did turn off a lot of football fans, etc. But if you "got his joke" he was excellent. Even Muhammed Ali loved him.

It was the 70's.....many drugs were taken....plaid was very in...so was polyester..combing your hair was optional.....so Cosell kind of slid by. Wouldn't fly today.
