I know it's not quite football season yet, but want your thoughts on football - thanks.
Is there any major difference for the athlete when they fall or run on artificial turf?

grass is safer, but I never minded playing on turf(astro or grassy). Kind of like it cause you felt faster, but you were also more prone to injuries. only about 4 teams in the NFL still have a form of artificial turf, all the grassy like new turf. That turf is cool but wasn't that fond of the track-like asphalt that it is filled with to make the field softer. The little black beads get everywhere, and i do mean everywhere.

grass, especially well take care of and smooth surface is the best though

I believe natural turf is safer. The ground and grass is softer. A cleat of a turning shoe may break the natural ground, but on artificial it may break the ankle. But because the ground is softer, it is more expensive to maintain because the play of the game can tear up the turf a bit, especially when it is wet. But I believe the NFL would have the money to maintain those turfs. Maybe they should consider the safety. And I think the fans would enjoy those player getting muddy. So I would vote natural.

Play on natural grass whenever possible and whenever you play in a city that doesn't have extreme weather.

But if you're going to play in a dome, for the love of god, don't play on that astroturf crap.

Playing on Astroturf is like playing on green shag carpet laid on a driveway.

Field turf is probably the best thing ever invented for the indoor stadium. It simulates real grass very well.

artifical hurts a lot more when you get tackled. natural gets torn up. also artificial lets you run a little bit faster. as long as the players are all covered up/no bare skin OR they can handle the turf burn, artificial over natural.

You can skid just as much or more on an artificial pitch.. the problem as i see it especially with a huge percentage of injuries being metatarsal, are to do with the design of the boot more then the grass.. the toes go into a crab position so combine that with flimsy boots designed for the footballer to hone his skills more then they are for safety and the simplest of tackles result in fractures / breaks in the foot.

Grass is the best, but the new Field Turf is much better than Astroturf, which was nasty. Stuff radiated heat like no one's business, and led to many torn ACL's.

Real grass. The game is meant to be played outdoors, regardless of the elements. I don't like the teams that paly inside domes, I don't feel that its a proper representation of the sport.
