You must admit that was the best defence in at least the last decade.

This Italian defence in my opinion was infact the best defense ever. Just look at the line-up...Zambrotta,Nesta(Materazzi tooks his part because Nesta had a groin strain), Cannavaro(arguably the best defenceman in the world right now) and Fabio Grosso. This back 4 was able to stop the attack and were only scored on twice during this whole tournament thus tying the all time record. However the thing that makes this defence so spectacular is their abbility to score goals. Grosso(1 goal),Zambrotta(1 goal) and Materazzi(2 goals) all scored throughout this tournament. This is why I belive that this Italian defence is the best defence ever.

You certainly picked the right name for yourself except you should have added confused. Are you really in a daze? Italy played well throughout the WHOLE world cup. You are clearly a poor sport french suck. France lost so deal with it. Why are the french people the biggest sucks and crybabies in the world? WAAA WAHHH. Regardless, Italy had to deal with a penalty shot yesterday that wasn't even warranted to Zidane. Also, France could not score a legitimate goal against Portugal but yet again was given an unwarranted penalty shot. It seems that without penalty shots, France would not have made it to the finals. It's too bad you italian haters can't face the fact that the ITALIANS ARE WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS OF 2006 so EAT IT!!!

Italy's defense was one of the best ever. People can say as many bad things as they want about Italy's championship team, but the truth is NO ONE got passed Italy's last line of defense! PERIOD! The statistics don't lie! Except for maybe Italy scoring on themselves! Or a penalty kick which was barely made by the way!
My only concern with Italy is that they didn't play as hard against weaker opponents such as Australia etc. Even then weak teams like Australia posed no threat to Italy's defense.

I think it was a combination of not only Italy's stellar defense but teams not playing as attacking as they used to, and perhaps should be. I mean, if you only run at a defense a few times a game, it makes their job easy. Still though, Italy did do a superb job. However, if they were up against, say, perhaps the best squad ever in Carlos Alberto's Brazil 1970 World Cup team, I bet they would of given up at least one goal.

Their best 'defender' was medina Cantalejo, where for example in the Australia game Zambrotta's hands in the box was not give, and then came that farce of penalty

Also, till they played Germany, they did not meet good oppositions (though they still struggled against USA and Australia). Would have liked to see how would they do against good teams (eg France were better than them and they were unlucky not to score more than 1 goal against them)

Yes, probably the best I can remember (and I remember the 1982 World Cup like it was two weeks ago!). They suffered NO GOALS during the normal run of play in this World Cup. I'm sure this has got to be a world record.

What about the German defence back in the 50's with Franz Brackenbrauer.

yes...i have to agree...italy wasnt one of the teams i was originally supporting...but seeing how strong their defense was (how germany couldnt penetrate it and neither france except in penalty kicks) really changed my mind.

people seem to think that playing defensively is a bad thing...but if they didnt, that would allow other teams to score so much more often! i think part of the thrill of football/soccer is that you never know when someone will score a goal, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. if players would constantly scoring, the game would become as boring as baseball.

Germany has without a doubt a better defence...way better. At least Germans know how to score goals....(without playing dirty)
