I agree - this is something I have never understood.

The common thing people say is "they sold out, man" - but if they got popular because they are good - why should that mean that they sold out.

I think people that like to think they have an alternative taste or dismayed to find out that mainstream is now into it.

Doesn't make sense to me...

That question sounds like Yogi Berra asked it! He's the one who turned thumbs down of going to a certain restaurant after a game, saying, "Nobody ever goes there any more because it's always so crowded." But I think I know what you mean! Some people like to think their tastes are just a cut above everybody else's, and, as soon as something gets trendy, they start looking for new music, a new look, etc. It's the way things are. The girl groups doing the Motown sound got to sounding exactly alike, and, lo and behold, the British took America by storm, and groups emerged trying to look and sound just like the Beatles. So it goes.

Yes, cause usually all bands starts to play music that the MTV crowd wants to hear, which is crappy poppy shi t. Most "fans" still support them... if they like their "new sound". But a lot will just move on to some other band who isn't selling out.

Example: My Chemical Romance, Avenged Sevenfold

Listen to their old stuff and you'll hear a big difference.

But hey, they're making their money, while losing their "once die hard" fans to little 12 year olds. So whatever floats their boats, I guess.

I dont like it when a band that used to be original, and play music that they believed in sells out, and starts making music for the masses that is no longer what their original vision was. I always loved Green Day, and I still like them, but I think they definately had some real sell out tunes on American Idiot. It sure not the days of their Kerplunk album anymore, is it.

True if your a hardcore fan you should stick with them to the end. But Green day was more hardcore back in the days and now they seem kinda Pop.

All of the people I have known who hated music, movies, books, art, or anything else just because it had become popular are people who are very insecure. They were picked on when they were young by popular kids and have never gotten over it. They cling to some sort of "individual" identity that prevents them from enjoying anything popular. I think it is a protection mechanism. If they are purposely distant and critical it gives them an aire of superiority. God forbid they find a friend that is just like them, because they are really insufferable. I just have to remind myself that their rude exterior is really hiding a scared insecure child.

Sold out? Half the album is dedicated to talking trash about the current administration and Give Me Novacaine is a beautiful song. I hope the haters get ran over by the wheel of the "bandwagon".

i think because bands like green day who develop a following after they mainstream obtain fans that don't understand where they are coming from and then once they do...it's over, most fans don't want to align themselves with a group that can be labled as "something"...i think this pretty much happened to creed after people started seeing them as a christain rock band for example...plus, the radio and mtv and vh1 get a hold of something and beat it to death until the fans can barely stand to listen to the first few bars of something that has been on every radio station and video music channel and television commercial and movie trailer known to man.

I think the fans are more attracted to bands that are underground and stay that way, because they might not like the people who support what ever is popular at the time.

I am one of those people. I like a band until it sells out. Green Day used to be good, not great but good. And now they suck.
They sold out a lot of bands do that just to get famous. Plus i like liking bands most people don't. Plus I hate people who like a band that gets popular when they had never heard of it. So I don't want to be catorgarized with them.
