I am breatsfeeding mother. I would like to know what food and in what portions should I consume during breastfeeding. I've read I have to drink 4 portions of milk-considering 1 portion -1 glass of milk - isn't it too much? Besides that, my baby seems to be fussy at dairy products. What should I do?

I've nursed my son for a year now... I've never consumed that much milk. My doctor actually recommended no more than one glass of milk a day... and I didn't even do that much. I produced so much milk that my lactation consultant called me the "Milk Goddess"... just eat regular type foods. I would load up on veggies... beans... lean meats, but no more than you would normally eat. They say you need to consume an extra 500 calories while you're nursing... Hogwash! I never did... and the fat content in my milk is pretty high (you can tell by leaving some of your milk in the fridge... you'll see the fat collect on top). If your baby is fussy... cut down on dairy & gassy foods. It does pass through your milk. When in doubt, eat a handful of nuts. High in protein, has decent calories, and is very good for you.

Actually, it really doesn't matter *what* you eat; your baby will be fine. You need to eat well so that *you* will be healthy. Unless you have had a truly horrendous diet for *years* (and often even if you *have*!!), your milk will be high quality.

If your baby can't tolerate dairy products, then find other sources of calcium. Two of the best are sesame and almonds. You can eat the seed or nut, grind them and add to baked foods, use the "butters" (techina or almond butter) spread on crackers or bread, or drink almond milk. Some leafy green vegetables (spinach or broccoli, for instance) have calcium, but many are high in oxalic acid, which interferes with absorption. In other words, if you eat spinach, your *toilet* will be on a high-iron, high-calcium diet. More problematic, there is wide disagreement on precisely which vegetables have oxalic acid and which don't.

cut out dairy products. I truely believe that cows milk has no nutritional value. Cows milk is for baby cows not humans. Did you know that humans and domesticated cats are the only two species in the world that consume milk after being weaned. Isn't that interesting. If the rest of the mammal world turns away from it, shouldn't that tell us something? You can get your calcium in other sources. I only buy milk for cereal and cooking. That's it!

It is a myth that you need to drink milk to produce milk....cows only eat grass!

You need to eat a well balanced, healthy diet to produce milk and maintain your own good health. If dairy is making your baby fussy, then cut it out to see if it makes a difference.

Check out the la leche league website for good information on diet.

You don't need to drink milk at all! I don't drink cow's milk (yuck!!) and have never had problems nursing my babies. It is very important to stay hydrated while you are nursing, and you should eat healthy things, but you should be doing those things anyway. Good luck and good for you for breastfeeding!

Contact LaLeche League or the nearest WIC office. They have tons of literature on breastfeeding. Usually all kinds of beans, milk, cheese, eggs, yogurt, ice cream, peanut butter, veggies, fruits, all the good stuff and you must drink lots of water.

Breast milk does not change depending on your diet. What may change is your own health, because your body will take from you what it needs to make the breast milk consistant. Just eat a healthy diet and you and your baby will be fine.

You should try eating barley. You can make a soup that is similar to chicken and rice..... But chicken and Barley... Barley is tastey... Very much like rice.... Also, try to get "Hatuey Malta" it helps with milk production.... Make sure you relax and close your eyes and imagine the milk coming down your milk ducts.... It sounds extreme.... But believe me,,,, I work full time and breast fed for 1 year.... Don't give up.... You won't regret it.........
