I would like to respond to the first part of your statement. Even before or rather than reading the rest.
Photography is an excellent Career move. A photographer offers the world new perspectives. You provide new points of view allowing understanding across clashing cultures. I could go on and on but the main point is, with every profession you have your weddings and party jobs. It is up to you, and how far you are willing to aspire. Your whole life is ahead of you, I suggest you take some time and discover what your really about, what your values are and apply them to your career and the rest of your life. Enjoy the journey it is where you will live the greater part of your life, and don't worry, dreams do come true.

I did the photography thing in high school, and started a degree in photojournalism in college, before I joined the army and was a combat cameraman (woman), I LOVED that, and it gave me a chance to experience photography (and videography) for a few years before I decided that while I LOVE photography, I like you didn't want to end up doing portraits, or weddings, and my family (which I started during my time in the army) was more important than a "real" career in photojournalism (the hours aren't steady or predictable, and there is potential for a lot of travelling around), anyway, it was a good way to say that was fun, and get some experience, but no thanks, what I mean is you could do something similar, and I don't know who your mom was talking to that heard vets (like animal doctor right???) don't make god money, they sure as hell DO!!! I've seen my vet's house!!! But you know a LOT of people who CAN'T make it into vet school become doctors (which means you have to be extremely smart and do VERY well in school, and somehow that's not enough for some... my cousin didn't get in to vet school, so now he's an OB/Gyn... just think of that next time you go to visit your family doctor, he's probably a doc because he couldn't cut it as a vet!!! Anyway, architect sounds GREAT with your interests but remember that's a LOT of math, so if you're not so hot in math class, it may NOT be for you. You know if you're in high school you have PLENTY of time to decide what you want to be, the army is a great place to try some jobs out if you are willing to go that route... but also if you would rather, HUNDREDS, not THOUSANDS of people enroll and take several YEARS of college before declaring their major, they just take all their core classed that EVERY degree offers. If you are really stumped try talking to your guidance councellor, OR I know there are several websites that offer free career aptitude tests (your school may even offer them too... that's why I suggested talking to your guidance councellor). Anyway, you have time so relax, a LOT of people I knew in high school (8 years later) are NOT doing what they planned to do back then, me for instance, I thought I would have a college degree and be working by now, hell I STILL don't know what I want to be "when I grow up" and I'm married with two kids (I'm a stay at home mom, which if you told me that's where I'd be 8 years after I graduated high school back then I would have laughed my @$$ off at you, but you know I LOVE it, I'm heading back to school to get my college degree when my youngest, who is a little over a year now, is three, that way I can spend as much quality time raising my kids the right way... according to ME). Don't stress about it, but go with your heart (even if that means you don't make as much money) because remember what ever job you eventually DO pick (I want to be a physics engineer), you will be "stuck" with for the rest of your life, so you better ENJOY it!!!

In my opinion, it's a little early in your life to worry about that. Why not try out some different things and see what sticks? Take classes, be an intern, work part time, read, talk to people who are vets, architects, designers, etc. Do you really have to decide right now?

I work for a home builder. They have a design department. The designers sit with the homeowner to decide on what structural changes they want, then sit with the decor department where the homeowner chooses colors for their new home. It's fun and it's good if you like dealing with people. Good money too.

Architecture sounds good from what you describe. The other marketable skill in design is probably some form of graphic design.
