I took the "political compass" test and one question was as stated above. I don't think that you should be proud of a country just because you were born there. Isn't that the same as saying "I'm proud of my child even though he is a serial killer and cuts out body parts for his wall" ? I mean, could you be proud of a country even if you didn't agree with its values and the way it deals with problems?

Tell me what you think:)

I agree that you should not blindly praise your own country, but rather look at it critically. After all, a country's own citizens are the only ones in a good position to make things better.

Having said that, a little bit of civic pride is not a bad thing as long as it doesn't devolve into nationalism. You don't choose your body, your race, your parents, your country, a lot of things, but you do have to deal with the cards you've got so you might as well make it your own. If you don't like the values or the politics it's your responsibility to help change them. And you can always be proud of the people, the history, the land itself.

Yes, you should be proud of your country just because it is your country....that is called being patriotic. This doesn't mean you have to love everything your country does. Just like the mother of a criminal more than likely still loves the son or daughter because it is her child...but hates what he or she does. If you seriously and consistently disagree with your country's values...then perhaps you should consider moving somewhere that is more agreeable?

That's a completely subjective question. Maybe you're proud of it because at a local level, it's a good, wholesome place where you're safe and comfortable. However at a national level, it's dispicable and you hate it. There's more to a country than just it's politics. Look a little deeper and ask yourself, what specifically makes you proud, and what doesn't. There's a bigger picture here than just our politics.

I totally agree with you. Don't be proud of a country just because it is the best. Be proud of it because you admire their beliefs and the way they handle things. There is nothing wrong in being ashamed or having pride of your country.

Nationalism is the enemy of intelligence and democracy. It is a distructive force that has led to World Wars, colonialism, and worldwide hatred. Nationalism leads people to believe you can check your morality as the door so long as you are waving a flag. "Thou Shalt Not Kill" doesn't count if my country is at war." "Blessed are peacemakers," not longer becomes a teaching when it is inconvenient to kicking some a**. "Should countries be able to have nuclear weapons?" Well sure, if it's my country and no yours. International treaties? Well aren't we an exception to that? I see no greater threat to in the world world today than ultra-nationalism.

Would you have been proud of WWII era Germany?

It is the duty of a patriot to hold its govt to the standards inherent in the country's ideals. In America, we used to be able to be proud that whatever wrongs we came to understand existed, we strove to right them. We're going through a strange and shameful time, right now.

You can be proud of your country and still be pissed at the way the current idiots are running it into the ground because they think the Rapture is coming so they don't care what they do or who they hurt.

Absolutely not. Proclaiming "my country, right or wrong" is about as inane as saying, "my mother, drunk or sober." You should be proud of your country because of the values it provides for you - and the only true value a country can provide is freedom.
