Well... the BEST brand is called Hobart, the under-counter commerical dishwasher. I just bought one for my church, but trust me it's extremely expensive (about $5,000)... it's commercial grade has a two minute cycle and sterilizes... the detergent and jet dry are put in once a year. A pump puts the precise amount in for your dishes.
My sister is an attorney and bought one for her home. But you'll only find chefs, and really wealthy types with them.

I've had good luck with Whirlpool but that doesn't guarantee that their latest models are the best. Also, I usually go for something with few fancy features so the high-end versions may be different.
Your local library should have copies of Consumer Reports, which can give you results of tests on recent models and you might want to check sites online such as http://www.epinions.com, where people give feedback on things they've purchased.

KitchenAid for me. I won't ever own a GE or Kenmore again. Make sure you get stainless on the inside. Avoid machines that have the cone thingy that comes up through the bottom rack as it takes up too much space and makes it impossible to put pots there.

Bosch... It's between $800 - $1200... is very quiet, and does the job. I've owned one for over 3 years... and I love it.
