Any wired and wireless configuration up to 4 people will work. For example, on my Xbox 360, me and my friends usually play by hooking up two wired and two wireless controllers. You could also hook up 4 wireless controllers. But you cannot hook up more then 2 wired controllers....well unless you buy a USB hub, because the XBOX 360 supports them :D. But if you plan to get Xbox Live like I did, then this question is a moot point, because ou will barely have your friends over. You'll be too busy playing...
