which way is a bench on a main street supposed to face? the street of the buildings?

Ok, so our city just redid our main street and i was driving down it the other day , and i look to the sidewalks, and i see out benches are facing away from the road. Which to me seems a bit odd. Just wondering what is most often seen

I would think benches would face the street...I dunno.

I have seen benches either way. If there is bus service, the benches face the street. If the sidewalks are wide and in front of a shopping or eating building, they may face the building and away from the street.
