they should be fine if you have a tank big enough to currculate water (with a filter). snails need clean fresh water with plenty of oxgen, bettas can live in a jar for a long time, but you need to change the water EVERY day...its your choice if you want to change the water everyday, or just get a filter system. anyways, i have known bettas to be aggressive towards very small snails, so i guess it depends on the size, im just saying, the snail should be fairly large...i hope it helps...

in most cases yes this will work
there are few times where the beta is espically aggressive and will kill the snail
if you want to get a snail get a mystery snail
the mystery being that they dont reproduce like crazy and over run your tank
but heres the bad news...
at this time the fda has put a ban on snails
apparently there was some issuses with snails killing rice crops and so there is now a ban on pet stores getting them
the mystery snail is not the snail that caused this problem but for now the ban just says snails and has not yet been ammended to clear mystery snails from this
so you may have a hard bit of luck finding one

Yes it will be fine, the only factor is snails will produce alot of waste so a tank of 2 gallons would be best with a male betta(betta splenden) a sponge filter is best, as male bettas aren't naturally long finned and since at lfs you will see long finned males, the fins catch current from a power filter and the fish has problems swimming.

Betta will eat very small snails, however a large snail will not be a problem.
The only problem that I can see is that snails breed like mad and it is very hard to get rid of snails once they get in your tank.

No don't do that. your beta will attack the snail to death. Beta's are very territorial. I can give you an example why. I had a really big male one for like 4 months. Then I got a female one, hoping I could someday mate them. The male beta attack the female one to death even though it was just another beta. But guess what, after the second day the female beta commited suicide, by jumping out of the bold. I was sadden for a few days.

it would be ok if you want to put a snail in tank with your betta, b/c more than likely your betta wouldn't even notice the snail.

Bettas are actually quite peaceful fish, as long as they aren't with their own kind (except for breeding). So, in my opinion, the snail would be fine with the betta, as long as it is bigger than the betta's mouth.
Best of luck!
