I think as long as we have nationalism, it is probably a good idea. We in the States now worry about people who have allegences to other nations, yet also live here. Too many use our freedoms to take advantage of us, like what happened during 9/11.

For a while, I agree. Eventually, I'd like to see an international nationality brought about, when we can work out a really good Bill of Rights for the world.

For the record see_me, the United States does NOT recognize dual citizenship.

Those "Mexicans" you're talking about are not allowed to vote in US elections.

To answer your question, yes, if you actively take another country's citizenship, you should relenquish the previous...which is how it is in the United States. There are a few exceptions but they are freak situations. (I'm eligible for dual citizenship, but as an American citizen, there's no real point in applying for the other.)

To Daniel T: Please think before you open your mouth. What POSSIBLE advantages could a dual citizen holder have in the U.S. over a U.S. citizen? What, I get another passport that I'll never use since the U.S. passport gives me carte blanche? Oh, I know - I can now deny myself the right to vote by claiming I'm a citizen of another country, to which the government will laugh because they don't recognize that claim anyway.

I wait, *I* get it! Now I can apply for a working visa in the country where I'm a citizen! OMG, THE ADVANTAGES OF DUAL CITIZENSHIP

Here in the US it is "supposed" to be like that. It isn't. Those that have dual citizenship enjoy extravagant advantages. I don't know how to do that. So I think it suks! I have no idea why the laws here don't work like they are supposed to. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that foreigners will come here and work at high paying jobs for minimum wage. That should be illegal for the employer to do, but it isn't. US politicians would like you to believe this is a democracy. It is an arostocracy. The wealthy get what they want. No one else does. I hope that answers your question.

I wish I have a dual nationality (Citizenship). I'm American Citizen not because I migrate from another country, I'm because the USA invaded Puerto Rico in 1898.
I think is very fair for Puerto Ricans to have a dual citizenship. Or not?

So you live in Australia. Here in the US the hispanics; they live here but during the Mexican presidential election, they went there and voted. How crazy is that, and millions of them, this is unfair. Others cant do it bcause the country they come from is probably 3rd world or on the verge of becoming 3rd world OR they still need to support that country in case they have to return.

They want to hedge their bets.

The extra one could come in handy like when trying to flee Lebanon. (I don't think it's a bad thing- nobody should have to be stuck there now) Or if a family member back in the country where you came from gets sick then you can go and care for them without any fear of either getting kicked out or not being able to go back to your new home country.
