I see the term used a lot, but are these people that sell just their personal posessions? Because it seems like some people are making a business out of it somehow so I'm confused.

Sorry, I suppose I need to clarify. I know how ebay works and what a person who sells things on ebay does. But there are people who claim to make a steady income at this, and I don't know about you, but I definitely don't have enough personal possessions for that. Are they reselling products or something somehow?

There are several resources that ebay sellers find their merchandise such as: rummage sales, garage sales, thrift stores, book sales, estate sales, auctions, etc.

Every seller specializes in their own niche. My niche is collectible children's books pre-1970. I get my source of vintage books from the library book sales. They have them nearly every weekend all over the metropolitian area year after year. I get them really cheap and resell them for their estimated value on ebay. I just know which titles, authors and types of books are in demand as I have spent a lot of time researching and gaining knowledge in this niche.

Some other sellers specialize in a variety of niches going to estate and garage sales every weekend and selling their finds on ebay. Yes they can make really good money doing this that is if they have accumulated enough knowledge over time to know right off the bat which item is sellable. Lynn Dralle, "The Queen of Auctions" makes $100-200K a year doing this.

These are decent ways of making a living. I mean one is working for themselves with greater freedom, making more money working much less hours than their previous jobs. However it is highly competitive on the ebay market. What makes one make it, is knowledge and education. It does not happen over night. You need to educate yourself how to best sell your item on ebay, how to find items that are valuable in your niche through research and education, and what not to do when selling on ebay or make mistakes that cost you time and money. It is just like any other profession, we all have to learn how to do the job first before we can do it successfully.

I think ebay started as people like me selling from home as a part time thing. Now bigger businesses have jumped on the band wagon and sell in bulk. It's hard to beat there prices on some things. I like going to auctions and garage sales for my inventory. Hope this helps!

eBay sellers are people who are selling stuff on eBay auction site. They typically are:
a) Individuals like you and me who want to sell used products and requesting best quote that others are ready to pay for specific items
b) Retailers and wholesellers who are using platform like eBay to sell their products
c) Brokers or traders who buy items in bulk from other direct stores (like Dell stores, Sony stores etc) and re-sell them on eBay like online platforms.

Hope that helps. Surely they are selling stuff to make money and do business. That's the whole purpose.

E-Bay isn't a easy business because their price is almost like flea market. You will not find one item to have a value close to retail unless there is less competition.
