"Manhandle" is an Anglo-American expression of the 19th century. The expression originally meant "To handle (move or change shape) by human strength alone." For example, workmen "Manhandled" heavy timbers into place to build a railroad trestle.

As time passed, the expression came to be suggestive of fighting, abusing, or any form of excessive force. In cheap fiction and movies of the first half of the 20th century it came to be used almost exclusively to mean beating of a weaker person by a stronger person, usually of a woman by a man.
