I found out with all three of mine around 20 weeks pregnant - not sure about twins I would think they would know that fairly quickly.

Well, to be absolutely positively, no questions about it certain, you will need to wait until the end of week 40, give or take, when you can examine the parts for yourself. But if you mean, when can ultrasound tell, that gets more complicated. It depends somewhat on the quality of the equipment (by that I mean the ultrasound machines, not what is or isn't sticking out on the baby) and the skill of the technician. Boys are easier to spot that girls; around week 16 if conditions are right. To be sure about a girl, give it until week 20. Higher level ultrasounds can pick up the parts sooner, but sometimes, early on, girl parts can be disproportionately big due to hormones in the mother's blood, and so you can get a false reading. I've had seven children, and I knew ahead of time about all my boys (5), but the two girls were surprises... they couldn't tell yet when I had the ultrasound. Oh, regarding twins -- that's earlier, I believe. With really high-tech equipment I think they can see those from about eight weeks. Good luck!

They say it is possible to know by your third month from an ultrasound, but most doctors do not give you an ultrasound to find out the sex until 20 weeks (I think that is 5 months). Doctors can not always tell at 3 months because of the position of the baby so they like to wait a little longer so they can hopefully give you more or a correct answer.

At the very minimum... 13 weeks to pick something up on the sonogram... but it may not be 100% correct. Best way to tell is if you're having an amnio done, and that's done between 16 - 20 weeks of gestation. Through the amnio, they can tell you with 100% accuracy the sex. Otherwise, the longer you wait, the easier it can be detected.
