I don't buy things because everyone else has them. I buy them because I like excellent products, I don't like compromises, and I like things that provide the best value for the money. I do not like wasting money. And everyone who knows me knows that I do my research. They even make jokes about it.

Hands down, for me, the best media player is the Creative Zen Vision: M, not the iPod. It is the one I bought.

Creative ZVM, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways:

1) Better battery life than the iPod 30GB for video. 4 hours on the ZVM vs 2 hours on the iPod 30GB. The iPod 60GB claims 4 hours. I've travelled cross country on airplanes and watched over 2 1/2 hours of video on my.
2) Best video display goes to the ZVM. 262,000 colors versus only 65,000 on the iPod (either 30GB or 60GB). The color is great and viewable from wide angles. My 7 year old son and I watched movies and Lego brick animations together that I transfered to the player.
3) Best value for tons of music goes to the ZVM. After spending thousands of dollars on albums and CDs in my youth, I discovered subscription music 3 years ago. For a flat monthly fee, you can get all the music you can eat. I finally got almost all of the music I have ever wanted. Apple says people don't want to rent music, the want to own it. Hah! I refused to buy a portable music player until I could legally fill it with subscription music because I was tired of owning it. For as little as $10 a month, you can get a virtually unlimited number of songs and albums and transfer them to a PlaysForSure subscription music player. Can't do that with an iPod. You can do that with a ZVM. A ZVM will hold about 5000 subscription songs which translates to less than a penny for 5 songs a month. WHAT A BARGAIN. It's like getting the player for FREE and tons more music for the money than on iTunes.
4) Okay, say you want to own the music. There are more sources and prices are less expensive for the ZVM than for the iPod on iTunes. 79cents, 88cents, or 99cents versus 99cents on iTunes.
5) ZVM has a really easy to use interface (my 7 year old can operate it). It displays album art. It plays audio books from Audible.com. It plays video. It shows pictures.
6) The ZVM fits in my shirt pocket and my pants pocket.
7) The ZVM has really cool leather cases available such as the Vaja that I just bought.
8) Car audio manufacturers such as Alpine and others are starting to come out with PlaysForSure compatible controllers that work with the ZVM.
9) ZVM has an FM radio and recorder which the iPod does not.
10) Works with TiVoToGo to transfer TV shows recorded on a TiVo onto the ZVM
11) ZVM has a daytimer / calendar but I admit I don't use it. I have a Treo 650 phone for that. But if you want it, it is there.

Fundamentally it broke down to this: The ZVM is a great product. Great features. More choices for music and much lower total cost of ownership than the iPod if you are going to legally fill the player with music.
