All answers so far have not worked, I am looking for the way to do this in XP not 2000/me/98/95. All of the answers so far would work but when I right click the folder there is no customize selection as with past versions of windows.

you have to show hidden files and modify the folder.htt file in the folder.

Yes.

Right click on the folder
Click Properties
Go to the Customize Tab
Go to the Folder Icons section. Choose - Change Icon
In new window, Click Browse
Under File Type (at the bottom), choose All Files
Navigate to the picture you want to display on your folder
Click Open, Ok... Apply.

Open the folder you want to place the picture in.
In a blank area of the folder, right click and go down and select properties.
Select the customize tab and you will see a folder picture section.
Click on choose picture and find and select the picture you want to place in the folder.

You right click the folder you want to have the picture as a background. You then go to the last tab (customize) and then you select choose picture, browse to find your picture. It should work with jpegs or other formats

1. Open up windows explorer.
2. Click view>thumbnails
3. Right click on the folder whose picture you want to change.
4. Click the customize tab and then hit the button for change picture by folder appearance.
5. Seclect your picture and then you're done!

*If you want to change it back follow the same steps, but hit restore defaults.

If you mean as your desktop background-go to my pictures-click on the folder where the picture is- click the picture-right click-go to set as desktop background. This is for Windows XP.
