third party means that the application does not originate from you, or the place you download it. Or sometimes, say microsoft, will refer to a piece of software that works on windows, that they did not make, as third party. like software in the third person, ya dig?

usually, when something is refered to as a third party, it means it is not made by you or microsoft. microsoft considers itself a second party to you, because first, you are the user, and second, the main software you use (windows and office) are made by them. thus, the third party is another group who does not fall into either of the first two.

It is akin to the ads that General Motors and Ford say of buying parts for their cars, "Buy genuine --- parts." It is sometimes inappropriate to use substitutes because the technology is owned by someone else--remember the Blackberry network that almost got stopped because some patent troll said they somehow owned the rights to the technology? Its the same thing.

okay when you buy something, like a computer from Company A, then Company A is the second party. you are the first party.

If you buy software from Company B for the computer, then Company B is 3rd party and their software is 3rd party software.
