If you're in the UK there's no difference, 2 names for the same game.

If you're in the USA, soccer is the one played by kicking the little black and white round ball about and football is the one played with the giant shoulder pads and helmets and big fatties throwing the oblong ball around.

In Europe, what North Americans call soccer is called football. It is where one cannot use hands (unless one is the goal tender). It is played with a round black and white ball. Members score by kicking (or hitting the ball with other body parts that are not the arms) the ball into the opponent's net.

In Northa America the word football refers to a game that uses an oblong ball (resembling a rugby ball), that is usually thrown or handed from member to member in an attempt to get beyond a 10 yard mark. They have to carry or catch the ball over the opponent's end line to score, then they have the opportunity to gain extra points by kicking the ball through the goal that looks a bit like a big H. The ball has to go through the top of the H (or the line drawn upwards from the top of the H)

Well, Europe calls it football because you play it with your feet. Americans like to be different, so we call it soccer. Europe calls our football "American football".
