That's why Formatting should be the absolute LAST CHOICE.... AFTER you've tried everything else.......

Well contrary to the opinions above. Yes you can recover files from a hard disk that has been formatted. Following is a link to a google page full of software that does this for you.
http://www.google.com/search?q=file+recovery+after+format+software&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1
The problem usually is that the cost of software, time, and effort is way above the value of the files lost. So not many people ever try to recover files lost in this way. But this is standard practice for the FBI and CIA and other governmental organizations. They do it every day. They can retrieve data from up to 7 formats back. Meaning if you have formatted your HDD 7 times, they can go back and retrieve data from prior to the first format. Good luck.

If you have a wad of cash, you can take it to data recovery services and have them try to recover the information.
If they can't you still have to pay them though.
Remember: formatting ALWAYS deletes all information off a disk.

Well, there are data recovery tools that cando this, but they come very expensive.
Hope these trial versions, which you can download will help; though I think there must be a catch somewhere.
