how to use mp3 as ringtones...?

I want to take songs from my computer and use them as ringtones, how to I get them onto my phone using a usb cable, and do i have to alter the song to make it a ringtone. If I do can someone give me a link for the program that is free. Thanx, needs details. I have a motorola v323
