I think FIA's in a pretty difficult situation. If they find Zidane to be in the wrong, they may have to take away his Golden Ball Award. If they find Materazzi wrong, they may face a zillion questions of past provocations from other players/coaches - maybe even Wayne Rooney can challenge his red card.............

Zidane banned 3 match.
Materazzi banned 1 match.
Handshake.
Public excuses.
Smiles.
Happier columnists (same dishes are on the table from 9 July. They were pretty cold. Now FIFA microwaves oven is working...)
Definitively boring news...

The difficult situation FIFA is in came when they awarded Zidane. But now game is over. To have Golden Ball stripped away seems nearly impossible to me. ZZ was awarded some days after the match, today they'll choose only how match he must be banned. And they must ban Materazzi
1. according to Law 12 of the game - Fouls and Misconduct - Sending off offencies, point 6:
"A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off and shown the red card if he commits any of the following seven offences:
[...] 6. uses offensive or insulting or abusive language and/or gestures"
2. Having them both banned - 3 and 1 match respectively - could be a balanced judgment. Zidane's violent foul would be fined slightly better than De Rossi foul was. Having Materazzi banned FIFA would give evidence how serious his insulting behavior was.
Finally things returns as they were (a simple match accident and not a media campaign with Materazzian and Zidanian factions) and FIFA could better explain because ZZ was awarded.

I hope it'll be THE REAL END

I will be SHOCKED if Zidane keeps the Golden Ball. If for no other reason, FIFA needs to take it away because it's the only meaningful punishment they can give him, since he's now retired.

Materazzi may get fined, but he won't be suspended because he didn't do anything that's a suspendable offense. Expect FIFA to look into this more closely and make some rule changes in the future.

Even if Materazzi did get suspended, that wouldn't have any effect on Rooney - he was red-carded for swearing at and shoving Ronaldo, not for the "misstep".

Cannavaro is an fabulous player and I have a great deal of respect for him, however I believe that Zidane deserved his award for his outstanding career and what he has given the game.

He, Zidane I believe will be heavily fined and may even be suspended from future matches in whatever capacity for a period of time should he return.

Materazzi will probably receive a dressing down from FIFA which really is no deterrent for future abuse and perhaps a fine. I doubt they will suspend him.

To be honest if the referee assistants did look at video replays I can almost bet they will not admit that as it opens a whole new door. If Matterazzi did say anything I doubt he will either. Fortunately for him, there seems as far as we know to be no audio evidence. We will have to wait and see if FIFA have the integrity to uphold all they say they stand for and not just selective issues.

Zidane will be fined but he'll keep his award that he robbed Cannavaro of

Materazzi will be fined and suspended (depending on what they decide about his comments).

That's what will most likely happen even though I'd love nothing more than to see Zidane stripped of his award. He definately was in the wrong, he could very easily have killed Materazzi.

Zidane will be fined. I dont think they'll take his Golden Ball, though. Even though I believe Cannavaro should've gotten it, Zidane definitely deserved it considering he single-handedly got his team to the championship game.

Materazzi will be fined also, but not suspended, just on the pretense that no one is certain what comments he made to Zidane.

If Materrazzi pronounced some form of racial slur to Zidane, nicely of direction it is incorrect, yet Zidane is a expert footballer. And he knows of what the stakes are interior the international Cup very final. For him to bodily attack yet another participant is ridiculous. i individually won't be able to have faith everyone seems to be even stunned. he's complete one among those element a number of cases before. And the actuality that he could do it throughout his final game, the international Cup very final, at between the main needed factors of the experience, only extra beneficial is going to instruct you techniques a variety of of a egocentric, spoiled brat he somewhat is. it is unhappy that various French human beings's hopes and targets have been crushed because of the fact this prick could no longer administration himself for 20 extra minutes. i assume it is extra desirable to burn out than to vanish away.

I agree with the first answer but don't think that Zidane robbed Cannavaro of anything. I do think FIFA will have to make some statement to justify not pushing the rules to the max as written.

Everybody has to get either the right prize or scorn, but Materazzi has already got his!
Everybody can say whatever about me, but nothing against my loved ones. I rather to do "everything" to defend them.
