Emotions are the result of some kind of stimulation. They in turn can be a further stimulation. Some stimulations cause automatic reactions, as when you step on a sharp object, your foot will automatically step back. But emotions are not of that kind except in the physiological sense. That is, emotions can cause heart-ache, blushing, tears, a feeling of warmth or chills, and responses in various body parts. In that sense they control us, our body, but the larger behaviors that require thought are still controllable by the person undergoing an emotional response. A scary movie may give us chills, and make us scream, but we don't acutally get up and run away.

It's up to you. You can decide if you're going to allow your emotions to control you or not. You can try to simply calm yourself down and be cold and logical - become emotionally detached from the situation. Realize that few good things come from being ruled by your emotions. Usually we regret the actions we take when we give in to our emotions. So, stop, detach yourself from the situation, analyze it coldly and logically, then decide the best course of action to take. Don't let anyone control you by pushing your buttons. If they know they can do it they will do it everytime. Be the smarter one and be above it. If they realize they can no longer control you they will feel stupid trying and move on to do something else. However, they will try you again at a later date just to see if the "new you" is really going to last. Just dont give them the satisfaction of controling you.

I'm an emotional girl since i'm young. I still remember how i cried when my chick died in the toilet and another time when my 3 cute chicks were stolen.. It was heart-broken.
In my case, it is 50/50. Many times i'm overflown my my emotions, that's why i get angry, sad and elated. My feelings also goes up & down quite fast.. And every month i will have my emotion swings(think this is typical in the women?).
I'm changing anf trying to have grip on my emotions, coz as a young adult it is important to control your feelings in public and workplace. Even in a relationship, controlling emotino is essential, especially during a hard time and frustration.
Why, people quarrels mostly coz they lost the grip on the emotions and get controlled by their emotion, right?
Hope my answer helps ya~

I'd say that it depends on whether yuo have an understanding of what your emotions are and where/when they originate from. The more you understand them and their source the more you can control them, or at least allow you to make an informed, rational decision. If you do not recognize them as such it is easy to misinterpret your emotions as part of you-- thinking that you are your emotions, rather than your emotions being something you have. If you think of your emotions as part of your identity, as who you are, than they will have control over you.

When we process sensory stimuli (a person's face, a dog barking, sour milk, sandpaper, etc.), our bodies initiate a series of physical reactions. Within a few milliseconds, our brains attempt to figure out exactly what we are being exposed to, and forms an emotional reaction to the stimulus/ stimuli.
This entire process is quite involuntary and takes only a matter of milliseconds. After the process is initiated, we choose how to respond to the stimulus/ stimuli in reactionary terms. Sometimes we seem to react "without thinking," and sometimes we plan our reactions very deliberately. However, regardless of the speed of our secondary reactions, we still choose how to respond to our world. Emotion may happen before thought, but we choose our own reactions.

you get emotions from experiencing an event that comes at you not one that you create. You have no way to control your emotions other than to conceal them. So... your emotions control you

It's a 50 - 50 thing with me. Like, right now, I have my son with me for the last night before I take him to the airport tomorrow to return to Iraq to complete his second tour of duty. How much do I fear for his life and safety and yet keep cool about it all, and how much do I feel how much I'll miss him, and how much do I stay a "man about it". You can be damned sure I'll "be a man about it" and all, and I'll pray to Jesus our Christ as my Only God to keep my son safe in his last tour of duty against muslims, and that he'll return home safely in just a few months more. But does that mean I'm going to sleep peacefully tonight. Maybe. Might I wake during the night and worry a bit. Probably. Will I lose control. Hell no. So I might worry over a son I love so very much, who's so full of life in his youth, and you can bet your life, I have and will continue to pray to Jesus our Christ for my son's safe return. If all these self-acclaimed "athiests" here on Yahoo Answers were in my shoes, they'd be converted to Jesus Christ as I am and they'd drop all their stupid "atheism" and self-glorification. God Bless you for asking your question.
