The movie is based on the play...it's about John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester, a 17th century poet who famously drank and debauched his way to an early grave, only to earn posthumous critical acclaim for his lifeswork.

johnny depp's movie always fasinated movie libertin has been one of his best roles.recently the dvd has also been released and i think the movie based on histroy
