It's a practice amongst particular religious communities against those who break their religious vows - they "shun ya."
"Shunning is the act of deliberately avoiding association with, and habitually keeping away from an individual or group. It is a sanction against association often associated with religious groups and other tightly-knit organizations and communities. Shunning has a long history as a means of organizational influence and control. Extreme forms of shunning and related practices have rendered the general practice controversial in some circles."
"Shunning can be broken down into behaviours and practices that seek to accomplish either or both of two primary goals: to modify the behaviour of a member and to remove or limit the influence of a member (or former member) over other members in a community. "
The Biblical basis for this practice is I Corinthians 5:11-13, Matthew 18:15-17, 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15, Romans 16:17, and 2 John 10 and 11.

you may be thinking of sunyata -
ÅÅ«nyatÄ, शà¥à¤¨à¥à¤¯à¤¤à¤¾ (Sanskrit) or SuññatÄ (PÄli) is a term, translated as "Emptiness" or "Voidness", which constitutes an aspect of the Buddhist metaphysical critique as well as Buddhist epistemology and phenomenology. ÅÅ«nyatÄ signifies that everything one encounters in life is empty of soul, permanence, and self-nature. Everything is inter-related, never self-sufficient or independent; nothing has independent reality. Yet ÅÅ«nyatÄ never connotes nihilism, which Buddhist doctrine considers to be a delusion, just as it considers materialism to be a delusion.

it has subtle reference to depression and destruction or that which has no hope.
