funny I never thought about this until I had my own child...now I say I slept like my husband...lol ..he never woke up when the baby cried....

It is *not* normal for a baby to wake up crying. Babies are supposed to wake up, nurse, and fall right back asleep with no trauma whatsoever. The saying dates back to *before* parents were encouraged to let babies cry.

I think this comes from the fact that a baby typically has no cares in the world and therefore enjoys a peaceful sleep.

They mean that they slept peacefully. No bad dreams. No waking up with that annoying jerk that happens when you feel like you are falling. Basically, it's like you slept like a rock, on with a different metaphor attached.

It does seem a bizarre question, but "sleeping like a baby" refers to the idea that babies don't have the stressors adults have and their sleep is peaceful.
