most likely it is just a bad sprain (a stretching or minor tearing of the ligaments of your ankle). Be very easy on it (don't put full weight on it) for at least 3 days, continue to ice it on and off throughout the day, elevate it above your heart to reduce swelling (place it on a stack of pillows while lying on the couch). You can take ibuprofen for the pain, if it seems to get worse or doesn't start to feel better in a few days, contact your doctor.

Just to play it safe, I'd go to the ER and have it x-rayed. If it's badly sprained, or fractured, you don't want to be walking around on it and injuring it further. A simple hairline fracture can turn into a major injury if you think it's OK and you're trying to hobble around. Good luck, and feel better.

I had one of those in my foot. It felt like an itch. I went to the doctor who did an x-ray and found a hairline fracture.

There are ALOT of bones in there and they can very well break in odd ways. you NEED and Xray ($50 or so...don't sweat it)

The alternative is never playing soccer again. Kind of a no brainer, huh? Do it now.

Ice on and off 20 min. each. If it's not badly discolored, and you can walk on it, I wouldn't worry. I have had sprained and broken ankles. It's pretty obvious when there's something really wrong.

You may have a sprain, you may have a torn ligament.

Icing helps, but you need a pro to determine if you need taped or immobilized.
