My car has a really rough idle and runs funny at low speeds/rpms'. however, when i'm on the gas there is no loss of power. I figured it might be the egr valve because it does seem to be leaking (did some tests), but when i pulled it off and covered the intake port it didn't make any difference in performance (i'm guessing it should have solved the problem). so, now i don't really know what it could be that's causing this. i've checked all the vacuum lines and they seem to be fine. also i sprayed carb cleaner around the intake and there are no leaks there. please help...i'm really confused now.

ok, someone commented that a rough idle is common...let me just say that it's idling really rough, not just a little. and the spark plugs are white, so i know that it's getting too much air from some place.

clean the iac motor ( idle air control) with carb cleaner. disconnect the battery to reset the computer. reconnect and start the engine. let it run for 1 min in park and 1 min in drive to relearn the idle strategy.

Rough Idle is a standard for all Bronco engines once they grow old. EGR valve only sends combustion cooling gases(Nitrous Oxide) back to intake. An EGR valve not working properly on a Bronco is rare, and this won't cause a rough idle, it will only cause loss of direct horsepower.

Spraying anything isn't a good way to find a vacuum leak, since it will merely suck fluid in, not blow bubbles. The best way to find a vacuum leak is to get a long, flexible tube, and listen for a hiss. Once you find the general area of a hiss, listen through the tube. If you can't find anything, but you hear this hiss all over the valve covers, you're hearing a normal sound. A vacuum leak that normally occurs on a 351 usually is in the back, behind the top of the engine. There's a tube that runs around the back which is very difficult to get to. But rough idle is something you usually can't cure for a bronco. I had this problem with my 93, and couldn't find anything to cure the problem. Turns out to be an issue with the extra strain on an older Borg-Werner transmission. As they get older, they become more resistant. If you have it rebuilt (an automatic will cost you around $2100 at Aamco, and I wouldn't go anywhere else) the rough idle should subside, or atleast calm slightly.

Now if your idle is so rough that your vehicle vibrates heavily everytime it falls down, you might have a cracked head or head gasket leak. Broncos break heads like nobody's business after they have some mileage on them.

Here are some things you can replace that are cheap:

Air Filter
Change Oil/Filter
Fuel pressure regulator
PCV valve
Crankcase Emmissions filter
Fuel Filter(not likely, and a ***** to do the job)
sparkplugs and wires(need to be done anyway)
Ignition button and cover
O2 sensor(intake, not exhaust)

It sounds like your idle is turned a little too low. There should be an idle screw adjustment on the fuel pump, and in 14 years it may have detuned a little.

I assume you've checked spark plugs and what-not, otherwise do that too.

DO you've THE guide THAT got here which include your VEH? somewhat suggestion FROM lady TO lady(I DO my own artwork ON MY vehicle) bypass to the vehicle aspects save AND GET OU A e book on your vehicle WITH THE year. it is going to inform you the position, the thanks to DO, WHAT different issues it would properly be. yet usually THE EGR VALVE ON THAT year AND MAKE might want to be OFF on the right area OF THE VALVE conceal. THE EGR VALVE might want to be round. ITS no longer VERY enormous. in case you ALREADY offered ONE, seek for an same aspect ONYOUR vehicle.

edit: on a 92 you can check the codes with a test light might help narrow things down
