I actually heard an NPR story on this. It's a way of not being exact. Like, if you're not 100% sure on your numbers or what have you, it's just a way of saying "this is an estimate." It's also used when quoting someone, as in, "He/she didn't say these words exactly--I'm paraphrasing here..." and gets overused by teens who aren't confident with what they're saying. Then there are the people who just throw it in as a gutteral stop (like "uh" and "um") while they're thinking of what else to say.

For conversation filler... I've found that many people are afraid to pause during speech and feel the need to "fill" their sentences with something so the listener does not get bored... same reason some people swear a lot when the speak casually. I also agree that it becomes habit for many people.

It drives me crazy too!!!
I saw a thing on 60 minutes or something along those lines one night that said the word like is the most used word in the english language!!
I have to admitt that it does beat out the uh!

I think it's like something that young people like started to be like cool. But,it irritates the hell out of me.

Like, it is like a like habit. And, like I get like annoyed when other like people say it, but then I like say it and I like don't even know it. I gotta stop this like thing!!!!!!!!

You know, its like I'm not sure but you know its like really stupid isn't it you know? I agree....makes me feel like everyone is on something and really need to take a drug holiday.
